HHYMN, DELS plus BOY MANDIVILLE

The debut album from HHYMN messes with my head in two main ways. Firstly I cannot fathom how this band are not better known, particularly in the Mumfordian Era we currently inhabit, we’re so much more open to folkier, less conventionally ‘bandy’ sounds. Secondly in the classic way of a great album, trying to decide my favourite track is a right pain in the arse. If you were holding my arse to ransom promising only to stop the pain if I did pick a fav then I guess I’d have to say ‘These Hands’.

I guess my ears were always going to be favourably disposed to a track by an artist called DELS (you look confused, think about it…). Swaggering down my ear canal before confidently asking my ear drum what a pretty piece of anatomy like it is doing in place like this, ‘Capsize’ is a sleazy piece of DubHop (see what I did there?) at its dirty best.

You often hear peeps talk about an ‘AfroBeat’ sound well how about ‘AfroPluck’? That’s what comes into my possibly misguided mind whilst enjoying the sounds of BOY MANDIVILLE’s ‘Gorilla’. The plucky (who’d have guess it?), staccato guitar sounds really making their Garfunkelian mark if ya will.
