The genius of track title ‘Avant Gardener’ hints at the joy awaiting thee as soon as you invest five minutes and twenty three seconds of your day in COURTNEY BARNETT. An artist that delivers musically and lyrically in equal measure. AG starts with a subtlety seductive bass before the dry, narrative vocals of Miss Barnett kick in, before too long you realise she really is singing about gardening – dangerous on the edge near death experience gardening. Just as you start to channel your inner Alan Titchmarsh your ears get seduced by some really blissful choral harmonies and then the story recommences… all that darker, still compellingly quirky and engaging, “the paramedic thinks I’m clever because I play guitar, I think shes clever cause she stops me from dying”, not to mention the constant refrain “I’m not that good at breathing in”. This girl is good, like really good.
STEVE MASON clearly had his weetabix the day he wrote ‘Fire’, the track has the funk, plus a size-able chunk of the hot stuff in his belly (is fire measured in chunks?). A song that demands your attention lyrically as potently as it grabs you by the ass and drags ya dancefloor wise for a bopp. One of those juxtaposition tracks that can get you dancing joyously like a loon without registering the less than gregarious message in the lyrics, like a straight dude singing ‘It’s Raining Men’ at the top of his voice.
You had me at, “Rappers wear bling cause they wanna look pretty” Scroob, love that lyric from SCROOBIUS PIP as he hooks up with his ole mate DAN LE SAC for a new album, the sample on lead track ‘Gold Teeth’ is just as compelling as the aforementioned lyric.
