‘Come A Little Closer’ by LIV is a naughty rapskallion of a song, I can almost imagine a cheeky winking face embedded into the sound waves of this track, bit like how Irish Grannies see images of Jesus in the potatoes they’re pealing for Xmas lunch. This a track full of sass and swagger, a track that melodically and lyrically says I’ll show you mine if you show me yours. This is hot.
‘Road’ by WE ARE SHINING is a big track. Like LIV there is plenty of swagger but this ain’t as much sexual (although that vibe is lurking somewhere amidst the sonic bedsheets), this is more tribal with a hint of psychedelia, this is the best night camping you’ve ever had – fire, best mates, great tunes, plenty of stimulation and maybe even an accidental passing visit from the Spearmint Rhinos camping club. Not sure I’d wanna be around for the come down the next day though. Like this production a lot.
Let’s chat the elephant in the room straight away, at times there is a hint of Mick Hucknall about SEINABO SEY’s vocal, specifically the initial deep notes. Right, now the audio elephant has been addressed let’s focus on how epic this piece of New Music is. This could have been a stand out track in Zane Lowe’s re-scoring of Drive, it’s epic, absolutely epic. A huge, sonic cathedral of a song. Walls of sound cascade into moments of sonic intimacy before rising up again into yet more humongous waves of audio surrounding your ears in a glorious, ethereal soundtrack-tastic way. ‘Pistols At Dawn’ is a big tune this, had you gathered that?
